OPERATIONS MANAGER, TARGET MARGIN THEATER

Reports to: Artistic Director and Associate Artistic Director
Full-Time, Exempt
Salary: $60,000
Location: New York

Target Margin Theater seeks an Operations Manager to join our small and dynamic team. Our new Operations Manager will collaborate with the Artistic Director and Associate Artistic Director to manage the company’s activities and advance the next phase of our growth. The most important qualities we seek are a deep affinity for our company’s artistic mission, and a commitment to the values we aspire to embody in every dimension. Target Margin is an arts organization, but our work expresses the values of justice globally: anti-racism, equity and humane treatment for people, access for all to the work we make and the world we aspire to create. We embrace unorthodox ways of working and seek new ways to think about how we collaborate. BIPOC candidates, LGBTQ+ candidates, and candidates abled in all ways are strongly urged to apply. We also encourage those who may not have conventional resumes to apply; there is no degree requirement for us. Ever. We like to eat.

Target Margin serves diverse and overlapping communities, including artists and theater professionals, audiences, students at many levels, and our neighbors, local Sunset Park residents Our goal is unlock the enormous potential of the space we have called home since 2017. Target Margin Theater’s move to Sunset Park, into a dedicated performance, office, and rehearsal facility, has fostered a sea-change in our programs. We have begun to work toward realizing the possibilities of the space with some success, but we know that our new home offers much greater potential growth and mission-driven impact. Everyone on our staff is expected to participate in the artistic conversation at Target Margin.

Responsibilities:
Target Margin’s new Operations Manager will be broadly responsible for our physical plant and the hardware and software for everything we do. Notably:

Facility Management. Manage Target Margin’s physical space at 232 52nd Street in Sunset Park; supply, maintain, organize, and effectively schedule TMT’s office, studios, and performance space, as well as the façade, entryways, and sidewalk; work with Target Margin’s landlord to keep the envelope of the building in good condition; supervise part-time staff who support facility functions.

Technical Support. Provide technical support for all of Target Margin’s hardware systems in the building, both office and production related, and the software needed for them to run. This will include maintaining, organizing, and managing the repair of our lighting and sound equipment, our printer and telephones, and our toilets and sink.

Space Rentals. Renting our 2 studios and our performance space is effectively a small business. Our new Operations Manager will lead the strategy and management of rentals to grow the income we can earn from this business. The Ops Manager will market, negotiate and oversee execution of rental agreements. They will coordinate rentals including scheduling, supervising, and staffing this business; arranging supervision when renters enter the space, as they visit us, and at the conclusion of their rental period; ensuring renters’ compliance with our rules and limits for the use of our spaces. Gathering experience from the marketplace and adjusting our strategy as we learn more about the business.

Other. Support other development and programmatic efforts in collaboration with Target Margin leadership, as needed.

Requirements: We are looking for candidates with technical and/or management experience in a theatrical setting. An appetite for supervising our rental business will be crucial for success. Target Margin is a small company where we all pitch in to make our work succeed. Though this is a Management position, it will require hands-on work too; no one is too big to clean up the bathroom here. Beyond that, it is important that our new Operations Manager has a commitment to Target Margin’s mission, values, and our work.

We are excited to work with a range of humans with all kinds of diverse experience. Your difference is an asset!

Helpful skills but not required:

  • Experience managing facilities and/or rentals
  • Creative thinking around sales and generating rental income
  • Experience with theatrical lighting and/or sound equipment
  • Proficient with PCs and Microsoft Office Suite
  • Experience with engaging with diverse populations

  • Knowledge of or interest in NY theater scene

  • A sense of humor, love for good food and drink, and an awareness of the absurdity of it all

Salary: $60,000. Support for Health care / dental is included after an initial waiting period of 90 days. This is a full-time, exempt job and consistent presence at the theater will be essential.

ABOUT TMT
Target Margin Theater exists to change our shared culture, to remake the world as a more engaged, aware, and humane version of itself. Everything about our programs and activities flows from this.

We are a multi-OBIE Award-winning theater founded on the principle that works of art return us to real truths most powerfully by their divergence from a strict illustration of reality. We strive to energize the cultural landscape by producing and presenting innovative, experimental performances of classic plays, opera, literature and historical sources, continuously seeking to expand our conception of what can take place in a theater. ‘Difference’ is the generative principle of all we do – from reimagining the relationship between audience and performed event to the strong history of age, race, and gender diversity in our company – and is one of Target Margin’s most identifiable features.

In 2017 we moved into our first ever performance home in Sunset Park Brooklyn. Service to the layered communities of our neighborhood has now grown into an anchor and focus of our work. We cultivate and nurture substantial relationships with many community partners, and we work to bring our artistic work into meaningful relationship with the city around us.
